You have seen the little winged unicorns on someone's desk, or in a video where a collector peels open a silver foil bag and either squeals or sighs. Now you want one, and nobody will tell you which figure you are buying. That is the whole point of a tokidoki Unicorno blind box, and it takes some explaining.

This guide covers how the boxes work, what a chaser is, which Unicorno series exist, and how to buy blind boxes in Australia without paying more for postage than for the figure. Where something is collector-reported rather than printed by tokidoki, we say so.

What Is a Unicorno?

Unicornos are tokidoki's best-known character family: ponies that wandered through a magic waterfall and came out as unicorns, living between a hidden magical kingdom and our world. The design is a unicorn and pegasus hybrid, with a single horn, small wings at the neck, hoof sections on each leg, and the tokidoki logo on the chest or a themed design in its place.

The first Unicorno blind box series launched on 10 April 2011, with Stellina the first of its ten figures and still the face of the line. tokidoki itself (always written in lowercase) was founded in 2005 in Los Angeles by the Italian artist Simone Legno; for the brand story, read our what is tokidoki brand guide.

How a tokidoki Blind Box Works

Every tokidoki blind box in a series looks identical on the outside. The box art shows the full lineup of the set, and the figure inside is sealed in a silver foil bag so it cannot be seen, felt through the box or identified by shaking it. Accessories, such as the magnetic mask in the Masquerade set, are sealed separately in a pink foil bag.

The figure inside is random. tokidoki packs the boxes at the factory and the retailer receives them sealed, with no more idea what is in a given box than you have. This is why tokidoki's own site states that there are no returns, refunds or exchanges on blind boxed items.

Blind boxes ship to retailers in display cases. For standard Unicorno lines, tokidoki's product pages say a case pack is eight boxes, and warn that eight boxes do not equal a full set and may include duplicates. The Hello Kitty and Friends collaboration sets ship in nines, and Unicorno Lite in cases of 32.

So the sentence we would want every new buyer to read twice: you cannot choose the figure, and no purchase, including a full case, comes with a chaser attached.

How to Open a Blind Box

Slit the tape on the top flap with a fingernail or a blunt edge and lift the lid. Do not tear the box art: the side panels show the full lineup and are the easiest way to identify a figure later. Inside is a folded paper insert and the silver foil bag holding the figure; accessories, such as the Masquerade masks, sit in a separate pink bag. Keep the box and the insert.

Chasers, Secret Variants and Special Editions

Three terms get mixed up constantly.

Chaser. The chaser is the rarest figure in a blind box set, packed at the printed ratio rather than evenly with the others, and often shown only as a silhouette on the insert. Every named set has one. tokidoki prints "Chaser ratio: 1 in 48" on its standard Unicorno product pages, which works out to one chaser per six cases of eight on average, so most cases hold no chaser at all. Several series carry more than one chaser, such as Prima Donna and Fumo in Series 1, and collectors who pull "the wrong chaser" trade for the other rather than pay reseller prices.

Duplicates are the other half of the story. tokidoki's support email of September 2026, quoted on r/Tokidoki, says in plain terms that ordering a case does not promise you a case free of duplicates, and collectors reported After Dark Skeleton cases shipped direct with three duplicates. Collectors also report that since about 2021 a case usually holds the full common set with one common swapped for the chaser; that is an observation, not a policy.

Secret variant. Collectors report unannounced colour or finish variants on top of the listed chaser, and r/Tokidoki keeps a crowd-sourced list. tokidoki prints no odds for these, so treat any number as a community estimate.

Special Edition and Limited Edition. These are named single figures sold openly, with no blind element, such as the Twinsies Gamer and Streamer pair and the Series 12 Bambu BB Limited Edition. If you have your heart set on one design, a Special Edition is the honest way to get it. A blind box is not.

Exclusives and Variants

On top of chasers and special editions sits a layer of exclusives. Retailer exclusives are sold through one chain only, mostly the US chains such as Barnes and Noble, and rarely reach Australia. Online exclusives are sold only on tokidoki's own store, like the Spooks Unicorno collectors reported in August 2026. Numbered anniversary pieces, such as the 20th anniversary Prima Donna with an engraved number, are small runs. Colour variants of the same mould also recur across series; collectors report Pixie Dust Fairy reusing the original Fairy moulds, so a familiar shape in a new finish is normal.

Unicorno Lite

Unicorno Lite is the smaller cousin of the standard blind box: figures about 2 inches (roughly 50 mm) tall rather than 2.75 inches (70 mm), in translucent or chrome finishes such as Shimmer Glitter. Unicorno Series Guide

tokidoki has released numbered Unicorno series roughly once a year since 2011, plus a long list of themed sets. Where we could not verify a count, the cell is left blank.

As of writing, Series 12 is the latest numbered series, with the chaser Bambu BB and the standard 1 in 48 ratio.

Alongside the numbered runs, tokidoki releases themed Unicorno sets, and these are what you are most likely to find on Australian shelves today. Most hold nine designs including the chaser: Twinsies (pairs of 44 mm figures, chaser Milky and Cookie), Baby Unicorno, Shaved Ice Dreams, Spa Day, Botanical Bonsai, Pixie Dust Fairy, Fortune Cookie and Hawaiian Ohana. Picnic Party has 10, and the Arcane and Hello Kitty and Friends collaboration sets use the same format.

After Dark is the gothic sub-line of Unicorno. It began with After Dark Series 1 in 2020 (six designs, chaser Blair) and the current releases are named sets: Masquerade (nine designs, magnetic masks, chaser Majestic Phantom) and Skeleton (nine designs, chaser Sirena, with a glow-in-the-dark Kaijucorno and a flocked Midnight). Identifying a figure from an old series takes three tools: the paper insert lists the set, the box side panels show the lineup art, and The Toy Pool database lists every numbered Unicorno series figure by figure. Collectors who buy loose figures keep a written log of series and name, because a loose Unicorno will not tell you.

Coming back after a break is its own adjustment. tokidoki releases a numbered series roughly yearly plus several themed sets, and returning collectors on r/Tokidoki describe feeling overwhelmed by the cadence. Buy the current sets sealed, fill older gaps with singles from other collectors, and leave retired series for when a specific figure matters to you.

Mermicorno and the Other Families

Mermicorno is the Unicorno spin-off most people ask about: Unicornos that rode a shooting star into a magical sea and became half Unicorno, half fish. The first, Sirena, debuted alongside Unicorno Series 4 at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015, and Mermicorno has run as its own blind box line since, in the same format with the same silver foil bag. Buying tokidoki Blind Boxes in Australia

The recurring complaint on r/Tokidoki from Australian collectors is postage. tokidoki's official store ships from the United States, and one new AU collector in early 2026 was quoted shipping that cost more than the figures. AliExpress and eBay are the usual workarounds; the r/Tokidoki consensus is that AliExpress figures are usually authentic but often factory seconds, with scratches, paint traces, missing accessories and slow seller support.

Display and Care

Unicornos are mostly around 70 mm tall, so they suit a desk, a floating shelf or a stackable acrylic case. Collectors report that off-the-shelf acrylic cases are hit and miss because horns, wings and accessories make the dimensions awkward, so measure your tallest figure before ordering.

Three rules protect vinyl over the long run:

• Keep them out of direct sun. UV fades paint and can warp soft vinyl, and heat matters too, so avoid a north-facing sill in an Australian summer.
• Dust gently. A soft makeup brush or a can of air does the job. Avoid household sprays, and brush rather than wipe flocked figures.
• Clean lightly. For scuffs and grime, a soft brush and a slightly damp cloth are as far as you should go: no solvents, and deep scratches cannot be removed.
