What Is a Unicorno?

Unicornos are tokidoki's best-known character family. In the brand's story, they are ponies that wandered through a magic waterfall and came out the other side as unicorns, living between a hidden magical kingdom and our world. The design is a unicorn and pegasus hybrid: a single horn, a pair of small wings at the neck, and hoof sections on each leg, with the tokidoki logo on the chest or a themed design in its place.

The first Unicorno blind box series launched on 10 April 2011. Stellina was the first of the ten figures in that set, and she remains the face of the line. tokidoki itself (always written in lowercase, even at the start of a sentence) was founded in 2005 in Los Angeles by the Italian artist Simone Legno. How a tokidoki Blind Box Works

Every tokidoki blind box in a series looks identical on the outside. The box art shows the full lineup of the set, and the figure inside is sealed in a silver foil bag so it cannot be seen, felt through the box or identified by shaking it. Where a figure comes with an accessory, such as the magnetic mask in the Masquerade set, the accessory is sealed separately in a pink foil bag.

The figure inside is random. tokidoki packs the boxes at the factory, the retailer receives them sealed, and the retailer has no more idea what is in a given box than you do. This is why tokidoki's own site states that there are no returns, refunds or exchanges on blind boxed items.

Blind boxes ship to retailers in display cases. For standard Unicorno lines, tokidoki's product pages say to order a quantity of eight for a case pack, and the same pages warn that eight boxes do not equal a full set and may include duplicates. Some lines differ: the Hello Kitty and Friends collaboration sets ship in nines, and Unicorno Lite ships in cases of 32.

The chaser ratio is the one odds figure you can treat as fact. tokidoki prints "Chaser ratio: 1 in 48" on its standard Unicorno product pages, which works out to one chaser per six cases of eight on average. Collectors on r/Tokidoki regularly report buying a full case, getting every common figure plus a duplicate or two, and no chaser. That is the ratio behaving exactly as printed, not a faulty case.

So the short version, and the sentence we would want every new buyer to read twice: you cannot choose the figure, and no purchase, including a full case, comes with a chaser attached.

Chasers, Secret Variants and Special Editions

Three terms get mixed up constantly.

Chaser. The chaser is the rarest figure in a blind box set, packed at the printed ratio rather than evenly with the others. On the box insert it is often shown only as a silhouette. Every named Unicorno set has one: Majestic Phantom in After Dark Masquerade, Milky and Cookie in Twinsies, Teddy Cuddles in Baby Unicorno, Golden Fortune in Fortune Cookie. Some older numbered series had two chasers, such as Prima Donna and Fumo in Series 1.

Secret variant. Collectors report unannounced colour or finish variants that turn up on top of the listed chaser, and r/Tokidoki keeps a crowd-sourced list of them. tokidoki does not print odds for these, so treat any number you see as a community estimate.

Special Edition and Limited Edition. These are named single figures sold openly, with no blind element, such as the Twinsies Gamer and Streamer pair and the Series 12 Bambu BB Limited Edition. If you have your heart set on one specific design, a Special Edition is the honest way to get it. A blind box is not.

Unicorno Lite

Unicorno Lite is the smaller, cheaper cousin of the standard blind box. The figures are about 2 inches (roughly 50 mm) tall rather than the usual 2.75 inches (70 mm), and the sets we have seen use translucent or chrome finishes such as Shimmer Glitter and Liquid Chrome. A Lite set has seven designs including the chaser, and tokidoki prints a different ratio for it: 1 in 32, with the display case holding 32 boxes.

Lite boxes are a low-commitment way to try the format, but the figures are noticeably smaller next to a standard Unicorno on a shelf.

Unicorno Series Guide

tokidoki has released numbered Unicorno series roughly once a year since 2011, plus a long list of themed sets. Where we could not verify the number of designs in a set, the cell is left blank rather than guessed.

As of writing, Series 12 is the latest numbered series. Its lineup is Glow, Brekkie, Irasshaimase, Biscotto, Metrocorno, B-Baller, Blaze, Birdie, Nadia and the chaser Bambu BB, and tokidoki lists it with the standard 1 in 48 chaser ratio.

Alongside the numbered runs, tokidoki releases themed Unicorno sets, and these are what you are most likely to find on Australian shelves today. Most hold nine designs including the chaser: After Dark Masquerade (magnetic masks, chaser Majestic Phantom), Twinsies (pairs of 44 mm figures, chaser Milky and Cookie), Baby Unicorno, Shaved Ice Dreams, Spa Day, Botanical Bonsai, Pixie Dust Fairy, Fortune Cookie and Hawaiian Ohana, whose box folds into a display backdrop. Picnic Party has 10. Older lines include Halloween, Holiday, Lunar Calendar, Cherry Blossom, Gems, After Dark Series 1 (six designs, chaser Blair), Zodiac and Manga Mania, and collaboration sets such as tokidoki x Arcane and the Hello Kitty and Friends series use the same body and format.

Mermicorno and the Other Families

Mermicorno is the Unicorno spin-off most people ask about. In the story, some Unicornos rode a shooting star into a magical sea and became half Unicorno, half fish. The first Mermicorno, Sirena, debuted alongside Unicorno Series 4 at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015, and Mermicorno has run as its own blind box line since. Same format, same silver foil bag, same style of chaser.

The rest of the cast turns up in blind boxes too: Moofia, the milk-loving gang led by Mozzarella (2007), and the Cactus Friends led by SANDy (2005). Donutella, from a sugar-powered planet, has her own figure series, and she and Biscotti are the characters in the tokidoki Soft and Sweet vinyl plush blind box, a plush keychain version of the same random-draw format with seven designs and a chaser.

Buying tokidoki Blind Boxes in Australia

The recurring complaint on r/Tokidoki from Australian collectors is postage. tokidoki's official store ships from the United States, and one new AU collector in early 2026 reported being quoted shipping that cost more than the figures they wanted. The usual workarounds are AliExpress and eBay, and the r/Tokidoki consensus is that AliExpress figures are usually authentic but often factory seconds: scratches, paint traces, missing masks or accessories, and slow seller support.

Local stockists do exist, and buying a sealed box from an Australian business means Australian consumer law, local postage times and someone to email if the parcel goes missing. Two rules protect vinyl over the long run:

• Keep them out of direct sun. UV fades paint and can warp soft vinyl over time. A window desk that gets afternoon sun is the classic mistake, and heat matters too, so avoid a north-facing sill in an Australian summer.
